Obsidian CEO confident Avowed will be out in 2024- ‘There’s a lot of work ahead in the next while, but it’s not, like, ‘Oh crap’-

Avowed is Obsidian’s next big effort, a first-person RPG spinoff in the Pillars of Eternity setting’s Living Lands. We also happen to know it’s coming in the fall of this year, and for a moment we thought we knew when, until the information was scrubbed clean from the Obsidian website.

As spotted by Wario64 on Twitter, a post on the Obsidian website about the Avowed story trailer that dropped during the Xbox Games Showcase yesterday mentioned that the game was slated to arrive November 12. That detail was swiftly removed, though IGN managed to capture and share a screenshot of it, as seen below.

In an interview with PC Gamer amid the LA gaming showcase bustle this week (from before we spotted the redacted release date), Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart said that he’s c…

Shadows- Awakening, an isometric RPG where you play a soul-sucking demon, is free on GOG-

Watch On

You’ll probably be playing Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree this weekend. Hell, you’re probably playing it right now, and not even reading this. But if you are reading this, and you are not playing Erdtree over the weekend, and you’re looking for something else to jump into instead, allow me to suggest Shadows: Awakening.

I make this recommendation for two reasons: One, it looks pretty cool, and two, it’s free on GOG.

Shadows: Awakening is an isometric singleplayer RPG with “real-time tactical combat,” set in the Heretic Kingdoms game world. It looks like a fairly conventional fantasy romp, but the story has an unusual twist: Instead of the typical saver-of-the-day, you play a demon summoned from the Shadow Realm to consume the souls of heroes, which you can then t…

Republican vice prez candidate JD Vance nurses a secret passion for Magic- The Gathering, says his wife-

I’d wager there are very few politicians that any company wants associated with their brand, and there’s more than one reason for that. The obvious one, of course, is that politicians are inherently controversial, and an endorsement by someone on the right (or left) risks alienating your potential customers on the left (or right). Best to restrict your corporate politics to lavish, unpublicised donations and remain blandly apolitical in your public-facing stuff.

There’s another reason, though, which is that politicians are nearly universally kind of awkward and off-putting, and if they go about associating themselves with your brand then chances are the general public will start thinking your thing is awkward and off-putting too. Quelle horreur.

With all that in min…

Sci-fi thriller The Invincible shows there are parts of space we should avoid-

The Invincible’s new trailer, shown at the PC Gaming Show, reveals the stakes in the sci-fi thriller. As you watch Yasna search for her lost crewmates, you see how humans may want to think twice before colonizing a planet. The trailer culminates in an ominous message: “Not everything everywhere is for us.”

Wasn’t that a big film from last year?

Sci-fi fans may recognize the title of the space game from Stanisław Lem’s novel, a story that explored themes of artificial intelligence and evolution on a distant planet. Developer Starward Industries has changed some of the main elements of the plot, but the team intends to throw you into the same thematic mix. Stranded on the planet Regis III and separated from the rest of her …

The Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 7 closed beta is live for invitees, now that Larian has fixed a critical bug- ‘[The] dice are now rolling’-

July 25, 2024: While further info is still under wraps, Larian studios has announced that the ‘dice are now rolling’, making the Patch 7 Baldur’s Gate 3 closed beta available for those participating. The original story, as well as current details on the patch itself, can be found below.

If you’re wondering why the closed beta for Baldur’s Gate 3’s seventh patch is delayed, picture this: You’ve sat down to play D&D with your mates. You’re all excited to toy with some new homebrew content your DM has organised. You go to make a Wisdom (Perception) check to spot anything amiss in the room when, unprompted, your DM reaches across the table, grabs your dice, and throws them out of the window.

That’s basically what’s going on with Baldur…

The best gaming chair is finally cheaper than Secretlab’s store in Amazon’s Fall Prime Day deals-

It’s a rare thing indeed that a third-party retailer gets to sell a Secretlab gaming chair for less than the direct price from Secretlab itself, but Jeff Amazon has the buying power to secure an exclusive discount. Right now, you can buy the Secretlab Titan Evo for $509 at Amazon, saving $40 on the list price from its creator.

Traditionally, Secretlab will claim a saving from buying direct, and indeed it’s stating that even today, where it claims the non-direct pricing is around the $589 mark because it’s cutting out the “middlemen costs.”

But with a $100 discount coupon available at Amazon, as part of its Big Deal Days promo, you can bring the price down from $609 to that listed $509 price. That’s $40 less than Secretlab, and even with its own $30 discount if you’re a first…

What do you use those extra buttons on the side of your mouse for–

We have a surfeit of mouse buttons these days, and I found myself wondering: “I know how I deal with this cavalcade of stupid buttons, but how about everyone else?” Call me old fashioned, but I’m a three, maybe four mouse button guy tops. Give me left, click, right click, a scroll wheel, and maybe a cheeky thumb button for when I’m feeling spicy. My current mouse has nine buttons, including two set for DPI shifting right next to left click. I kept accidentally going from 1600 to 1200 to 800 while furiously clicking on heads or ordering around my party, so I defied the brain trust at Logitech and disabled them completely. I’ll use a thumb button for melee or a special ability on occasion, with the other one reserved for push-to-talk on the tail end of curry ni…

Ubisoft has an ‘improved version’ of Skull and Bones that it hasn’t shown anyone yet-

It has not been smooth sailing for Skull and Bones, Ubisoft’s oft-delayed and much-derided game of high seas piracy that, for those keeping score, still doesn’t have a release date. It’s fair to say that what little we’ve seen of the game so far hasn’t made a great impression, but chief financial officer Frederick Duguet thinks that will change once we all get a look at an “improved version” of the game that, for now, remains behind closed doors.

Skull and Bones came up during the Q&A portion of Ubisoft’s quarterly financial call, when an investment analyst asked about projected sales required in order for the game to turn a profit after such a prolonged period of development. What made the question stand out was a comment at the end, which isn’t the sort of thing often heard …

I’ll admit I didn’t really think about my opener today, choosing to plough straight on in there with the first word that popped into my head—and luckily for me, this turned out to be a great start. The answer came quickly, although I did worry when I turned over four greens, thinking I was about to be stuck playing hunt-the-consonant before I found today’s Wordle answer.

Today’s Wordle soon had me stumped. I had three greens all neatly lined up in a row, but I just couldn’t see what I needed to add to finish the game off for far too long. Luckily for me, I had enough free rows left to make a few (slightly panicked) guesses, and I eventually stumbled on the letters I needed. Phew!

You can grab all 3 Dragon Age games and all their DLC for a measly 10 bucks on Steam right now-

Friends, here is my story: Coming home to the UK from Summer Game Fest, hungry and heatstruck, I arrived at one of Los Angeles International Airport’s many food and coffee stands. Blearily, I ordered a latte and some kind of egg salad sandwich composed mostly of bread. The cashier told me that this humble repast would somehow be $21, in violation both of the social contract and mankind’s covenant with the Lord God.

Being an assertive and self-confident type, I said absolutely nothing and meekly paid up. But I shouldn’t have, because if I still had that $21 I could have bought the entire Dragon Age trilogy—base games and all the DLC—twice over in the currently ongoing Dragon Age Steam sale. In place of a thin film of egg smeared on a loaf of wholewheat and a latte that …

We’ve finally gotten a closer look at Titan Quest 2, and it sure looks a lot like Diablo 4-

Watch On

THQ Nordic has been very quiet about Titan Quest 2 since its reveal last year. That was probably wise—after almost 20 years’ wait since the first game, there’s a lot of pressure on new developer Grimlore Games to get this right. But we have now been treated to a new look at the game in action, and it’s looking… well, pretty good, but also a lot like Diablo 4.

As in the first game, it’s a classic action-RPG with a couple of major twists. The first is there’s no class system—instead, you build your hero by choosing two “masteries” (sets of themed abilities), making every character a hybrid. For the sequel, that idea has been expanded on with unique synergies for each possible pair of masteries, more firmly cementing that sense of creating your own class.<…
